Heritage Dialogues #2: Industrial Heritage in Southeast Asia: Case studies in Thailand

On 18 September, we held the second session of the “Heritage Dialogues”, which is planned as a casual communication platform to share knowledge, ideas and experiences relating to cultural heritage.

We welcomed Dr. Rungsima Kullapat, a researcher from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, as our speaker, who talked about industrial heritage in Southeast Asia. Dr. Kullapat is currently staying in Japan for three months to conduct comparative study on the industrial heritage in southeast Asia and Meiji-era Japan. Today’s lecture mainly focused on the Thailand’s industrial heritage, its distinctive features, challenges they currently faces, and efforts towards its conservation. Through her talk, which takes a broad perspective encompassing comparisons between Thai and Japanese industrial heritage – both of which began down the path of modernization around the same period – as well as differences between Asia and the West, we too were able to gain new insights.
