Workshop on 3D Digital Documentation of the Cultural Heritage and Its Application is Underway

We launched the "Workshop on 3D Digital Documentation of Cultural Heritage and Its Applications" on October 21, 2024. This workshop is organized as part of the Network Core Centers for International Cooperation on Conservation of Cultural Heritage Project, commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Seven experts from Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Egypt are participating.

Lectures on Photogrammetry, LiDAR Measurement, and case studies of 3D digital data applications were conducted over the first three days, from October 21 to 23. For the practical exercises, participants learned scanning methodologies and 3D digital documentation techniques using photogrammetry, applying these skills to real archaeological artifacts uncovered during pre-construction excavations at our premises. They also practiced measuring the architectural spaces within the building using LiDAR technology combined with a scanning camera. Through lectures and practical exercises, participants raised not only technical questions to lecturers but also shared specific concerns based on their experiences in museums, excavation sites, and site management. These topics often sparked enthusiastic discussions among them.

On October 24 and 25, we visited Chubu University in Aichi Prefecture for on-site training in wide-area measurement with UAV, simulating archaeological sites.

Next, we will conduct a study tour exploring applications of AR and VR technologies in Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Fukui Prefecture.
