With conflicts arising from differences in ethnicity, religion, and various values all over the world, it is increasingly important to respect cultural diversity and foster mutual understanding among people.

Scenery and events of the town where you were born and raised, archeological sites or ancient buildings which tell the history of the region and the country, arts and crafts together with the traditional techniques that support them…, every aspect of the cultural heritage is closely related to the identity of each of us. While protecting and succeeding them in the future, the cultural heritage cherished by people of other countries must be regarded as the precious common treasure of humankind, and therefore the international community must work together to protect it. This is the basic concept of international cooperation in cultural heritage.

The Japan Center for International Cooperation in Conservation is established as the national center for international cooperation implemented by Japan in the fields of cultural heritage conservation and research studies, within the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. Its activity ranges over various areas including the collection, research, and dissemination of international information on cultural heritage, the provision of technical support for the protection of cultural heritage in various parts of the world, the transfer of technology for conservation, the development of human resources, and the promotion of international collaboration on the protection of cultural heritage.

Almost 30 years have passed since the inauguration of the predecessor organization. During its history, starting from the initial stage centered on joint research with overseas organizations, the center has accumulated various experiences and formed a professional network for cooperation through the implementation of multi-faceted cooperation projects including emergency support for cultural heritage affected by natural disasters and conflicts.

Utilizing the know-how that Japan has built up in the field of cultural heritage protection, we will continue to implement projects effectively by working closely with domestic and foreign experts and related organizations.

Thank you for your kind understanding and cooperation.
