International Course on Conservation of Japanese Paper 2026 Begins in Tokyo

The International Course on Conservation of Japanese Paper co-hosted by the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (TOBUNKEN) and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), commenced on August 24, 2026. This course has a long history since 1992. This year's course attracted 131 applicants from around the world, and following a selection process, we welcomed 10 participants from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hungary, India, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

For three weeks, until September 11, they will study various aspects related to Japanese paper “washi” conservation, such as manufacturing processes, restoration techniques, cultural significance, and Japanese system for the protection of cultural properties. The program aims to deepen their understanding of washi and enhance their conservation techniques.
