1. Background, current situations

For more than 15 years the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (TNRICP) has been collaborating with the Cambodian national authority for the protection and management of Angkor and the region of Siem Reap (APSARA) in various ways, including conducting joint research and personnel training.

2. Objectives, activities

Since 2017, TNRICP has collaborated with APSARA for establishing the conservation and sustainable development plan for Ta Nei temple and has provided technical support to APSARA for the development project of the archaeological site based on the Plan since 2019. The project is being positioned as a pilot model for the maintenance of the site conducted by the Cambodian initiative and is expected an appropriate cooperation approach that can be inherited/progressed autonomously in Cambodia.

3. Examples of activities (e.g. symposiums, courses, reports/publications, etc.)

In 2020, restoration work of the East Gate with structural overhaul is being proceeding. TNRICP has provided technical and scientific assistance with the cooperation of external experts, such as documentation using 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry technique, archaeological excavation of the foundation structure, and consideration of suitable reinforcement by geological testing and structural analysis.
