Liaison Support for the Study Trip by the Architectural Heritage Division, NRICH, Korea

This week, five researchers from the Architectural Heritage Division of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH), Korea, visited Japan to continue their architectural preservation study, which began last September. The objective of this study trip was to conduct additional field surveys on restoration techniques for brick masonry structures, as well as to collect examples of traditional wooden structure restorations for comparative purposes. As with their previous visit, the Center provided support primarily through liaison coordination with relevant organizations and individuals. We also accompanied the field survey at the restoration site of the Nihonrenga Manufacturing Co. Factory on May 22, and held an in-person meeting to explain methodologies for the preservation and restoration of architectural structures, with a focus on brick masonry on May 23. It was carried out in collaboration with the Japanese Association for Conservation of Architectural Monuments (JACAM) and Mr. HASEGAWA Naoji, a leading specialist in the preservation of brick masonry structures.
During the field survey and in-person meeting, the exchange was not limited to one-sided explanations from the Japanese side; instead, timely and relevant questions and discussions were actively shared. We believe this interactive dialogue greatly contributed to the success and depth of the study trip, despite the limited time available. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Kyoto Prefectural Board of Education, the Okada Brick Factory, JACAM, and Mr. Hasegawa, for their generous cooperation and support in making this study trip a success.
