The International Course on Conservation of Japanese Paper co-hosted by the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (TOBUNKEN) and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), commenced on Monday, August 25, 2025. Known for its long history and popularity among ICCROM's training programs, this year's course attracted 165 applicants from 60 countries. After a competitive selection process, 10 participants from Ireland, Argentina, the United States, United Arab Emirates, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Czech, and Malaysia have been chosen. Over the next three weeks, until September 13, they will study various aspects of Japanese paper washi, including its attributes, manufacturing processes, restoration techniques, cultural significance, and Japan’s heritage conservation system. The goal is to deepen their understanding of washi, enriching and enhancing their own conservation techniques.
