Exhibition ‘East Asia Image of Modern Ages’ Opened

On October 10, the exhibition titled ‘East Asia Image of Modern Ages’ opened at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art (until December 27). The exhibition traced how modern Japanese painters and photographers have portrayed Asia from the Meiji period to the present. It consisted of eight chapters: Chapter 1 ‘Meiji ki dankai – bunjinga, rekishiga kara genjitsu e (The Meiji Period – From Literati Painting and Historical Painting to Reality)’; Chapter 2 ‘Ekizochishizumu no shosō (Various Aspects of Exoticism)’; Chapter 3 ‘Ajia no josei zō (Images of Asian Women)’; Chapter 4 ‘Higashi ajia de kaika shita “nihon bijutsu” (“Japanese Art” That Bloomed in East Asia)’; Chapter 5 ‘Kamera ai o tsūjite (Through the Camera’s Eye)’; Chapter 6 ‘Basue e no manazashi (A Gaze Toward the Outskirts)’; Chapter 7 ‘Naiteki kōya, daichi kara no genei (Inner Wildness, Illusions from the Earth)’; and Chapter 8 ‘Gendei nite (In the Contemporary Era)’. Featuring works of art by 107 artists, the exhibition provided a meaningful opportunity to illustrate the significance of East Asia for Japan from the modern era to the present. (Japanese)
