Exhibition ‘Paul Gauguin’ Opened

On July 3, the exhibition titled ‘Paul Gauguin’ opened at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (until September 23). It showcased approximately 50 works by Paul Gauguin, who exerted a profound influence on modern Japanese art, focusing on his artistic career from the 1880s onwards, when he began to take an interest in the wild, the antithesis of urban culture. It consisted of three chapters: Chapter 1 ‘The discovery of the inner “wildness”’; Chapter 2 ‘The tropical paradise: Mythology and reality’; and Chapter 3 ‘Beyond the South Seas: Painting as his dying wish’. The exhibition also marked the first in Japan that his late masterpiece, ‘Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?’, was on public display. (Japanese)
