3D digital documentation using digital camera and LiDAR scanners has recently been introduced and is being rapidly used.
The introduction of this technology not only reduces working time, but also makes it possible to document cultural heritage with very high precision.
It was decided that the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris would be reopened to the public in December 2024. A major fire engulfed the cathedral in 2019, leading to its roof and spire burning down. The French Government has been rapidly restoring the cathedral, and the restoration will soon be completed.
3D digital documentation enabled this rapid restoration. Before the fire, a digital 3D model of the cathedral was created, which was informative for the restoration. Therefore, 3D digital documentation is a useful measure for disaster preparedness.
This exhibition introduces various digital 3D models created by the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (TOBUNKEN) during our activities. You can access the 3D models uploaded on Sketchfab by scanning the code on each panel with your devices.
