for Preservation of Cultural Properties,”which differ fromthe other publications, included the outcome of researchexecuted to solve particular problems in preservationof brick structures. In the former, salt weathering anddeterioration due to freeze-thaw were focused on, withanalysis of the damage mechanism. While in the latter work, preservation of the material itself was focused on with theunderstanding of the causes of brick deterioration. Studieson the possibilities of preservation measures were made forthe sites of Ancient Ruins of Ayutthaya in Thailand, remainsof Ginza Brick Row (Collection of Edo Tokyo Museum), UsuiPass Railway Facilities (Annaka City, Gunma), and the BrickProduction Facilities of Former Japan Brick ManufacturingCompany (Fukaya City, Saitama). While advancements were made in materials conservation, there have been several research projects on the other majortopic in preservation and restoration of brick structureswhich is seismic protection. One of the early studies wascompiled as“A Handbook for Repairing and ReinforcingStructures of Brick or Stone Masonry and UnreinforcedConcrete”by the Railway Research Institute published in1987. Information in this report was directly effective forstructural facilities management. If it is to be limited to thosewith consideration to cultural properties, representativeliterature is given in chart 2. Firstly, the Committee forStudies on Analysis and Restoration of Historic Structuresin the Fields of Architecture and Civil Engineering of theJapanese Concrete Engineering Society has published areport based on results derived from an overview of varioussurveys regarding aspects related to preservation andrestoration of modern heritage properties. These surveysfocused on brick masonry structures, from analyses ofdeterioration of building elements or determining thesoundness of structures, to methods of structural repair. Also in 2009, the Specialist Group for Structures of MasonryConstruction established by The Japanese Associationfor Conservation of Architectural Monuments (JACAM)focused on structural analysis of historic brick structures forcompiling survey methods applicable to restoration practice.Along with these surveys, in recent years, there have beennumerous cases of restoration involving brick structures(refer to the appendix). Such sites are numerous, whencompared to other types of modern heritage properties builtof reinforced concrete or steel-frame. In 1956, Senpu-kanOsaka Mint Bureau Guesthouse (Osaka City) became thefirst brick masonry building to be designated as a nationalImportant Cultural Property; this marked the beginningof a constant increase in the number of structures to beprotected under the genre of brick masonry structures. Forreference, the number of non-wood-frame modern heritageproperties nationally designated as Important CulturalProperties is listed in chart 3, which indicates that thenumber of brick structures are the highest. Also, from theyears since erection, we can see that they were built in theearly years of Japan’s Modern period. Thus, compared to other structural types, experienceaccumulated through surveys and restoration of brickstructures is substantial. However, this is only among nonwood-framestructures from the Modern period. When weare to view the entire field of cultural property structures,wood-frame structures comprise about 90 percent ofthe country’s Important Cultural Properties with morethan one-hundred years of history in building protection;regarding brick masonry structures, the experience ofsurveys and practice is small and studies of past researchand restorations cannot be said to have been executed fully.Additionally, the materials of wood, reinforced concrete, and steel are still used in general construction today, andauthor or editor title yearJapanese Concrete Engineering Society日本コンクリート工学協会Committee for Studies on Analysis and Restoration ofHistoric Structures in the Fields of Architecture andCivil Engineering建築・土木分野における歴史的構造物の診断・修復研究委員会(編)Japanese Association for Conservation ofArchitectural Monuments (JACAM)文化財建造物保存技術協会Specialist Group for Structures of MasonryConstruction組積造建造物の構造に関する専門部会(編)Report by the Committee for Studies on Analysis and Restoration ofHistoric Structures in the Fields of Architecture and Civil Engineering建築・土木分野における歴史的構造物の診断・修復研究委員会報告書Survey Methods for Structural Analysis of Historic Brick MasonryConstruction歴史的煉瓦造建造物の構造検討のための調査方法20072009chart 2Reports on structural study of brick masonry buildings from the point of view of cultural properties7
