improving the resistance of an arched bridge. A newmasonry layer was added to increase wall thickness forimproving seismic performance. Also, fiber reinforcementwas adopted to further assure safety. This is an example inwhich traditional methods were developed to secure therequired level of safety.(slide 58) This is another example that I took interest in.Reinforced concrete slabs were employed to confine the infillof stone and gravel within walls for reinforcement. Higherrigidity was achieved without the addition of fibers, resultingin the same effect as that of fiber reinforcement. The topconcrete layer can be removed.Reinforcement of Floor Structures(slides 59-62) Experiments have been undertakenon measures to improve seismic performance of floorstructures. In the past, it was considered best for floorstructures to be stronger. For the plane of the floor tobe rigid, wood frame floor structures were replaced withreinforced concrete structures. However, today, after havingobserved the consequences of these alterations, I can warnpeople to“be careful.”Increased rigidity means increase instructural response and therefore, for example, a differentmethod of placing and binding together another layer offloor boards (instead of replacing) on top of the extant floorboards can be considered. The effectiveness of this methodis now being confirmed. Also, in an example from thepast, bracing was introduced, which can take the place ofreinforcing with boards or plywood.Prof. Eng. Different strenghetning systems(plankings, diagonals, nets, ..) and materials(wood, earth, FRP, Natural fibres) applied atthe extrados, for a total of 35 laboratorytests? High performance obtained for woodenplanking (45°, single or double) both forstrength and deformation capacity? The shear stiffness of the joist ceiling isprincipally influenced by the plankingthickness? The shear capacity of the floors is linearlyrelated with the strength of the fasteners? Proper double planking provides stiffnesscapable to redistribute horizontal loads tobearing walls, comparable to the effect ofmore modern floorsslide 60SM IngegneriaProf. Eng. Theseinvestigations have allowed to determine the thickness of the brick stone, the layering of the material between thepavement and the masonry vault and to characterize the mechanical property of the infill material. The infill has verygood mechanical characteristics and is made by stones and pebbles.slide 58Prof. Eng. Claudio ModenaInterventions - RESEARCHInterventions to reduce excessive floor deformability?
