Chapter 5 is a record of the study seminar titled“Seismic Protection Systems of Historic Masonry Structures in Italy andJapan”held on February 23, 2017 at Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties.As advancements are made regarding protection of heritage properties from Japan’s modernization period, the importanceof anti-seismic measures for masonry structures including those of brick is increasing each year. Various techniques havebeen developed and there are more options now available as preventive methods. In this seminar, we invited Professor ClaudioModena of Padova University with much experience in seismic protection of masonry structures, for a lecture reporting on antiseismicmeasures in Italy. He has been deeply involved in recovery projects in central Italy after the earthquakes that occurredin August and October 2016. From Japan, Mr. Satoshi Nishioka, who is in charge of seismic protection at the Agency for CulturalAffairs, reported on the present conditions in our country. After presentations by these two lectures, discussions were heldamong academicians and practitioners who are regularly involved in seismic protection of cultural property buildings.Included in this chapter are the two lectures of Professor Claudio Modena’s“Standards and Techniques for Restoration andReinforcement of Architectural Heritage: Research and Application”and Mr. Satoshi Nishioka’s“Recent Movements in SeismicReinforcement of Brick Masonry Structures in Japan,”together with a record of the discussions held among all participants.46Chapter 5 Criteria and Techniques for Repairing and Strengthening Architectural Heritage: Research and Application
