Restoration planningSeishi-do which was originally constructed in Seta,Setagaya Ward to celebrate Eiichi Shibusawa’s 77thbirthday was relocated in October 1997 to Fukaya City,Saitama Prefecture, his birthplace, on the occasion of theland on which it originally stood being sold.In moving this structure, although a method involvingcomplete dismantlement down to individual bricks wasat first considered as had been done earlier with otherbuildings, it was decided to cut the building apart into thesmallest number of pieces that could be transported; thiswas to preserve the advanced masonry techniques, such asthe intentional use of irregular bricks in creating texturedwalls with subtle uneven surfaces (photo 5-28) fn 38 .? Restoration Methodphoto 5-29Reconnected cutting line after restorationWhile the structure was cut horizontally along the brickcourses, in the vertical direction, owing to the various sizesin bricks which made it difficult to follow vertical jointsto neatly saw apart the walls, the walls were cut throughthe bricks and joints of each course (figure 5-10) (photophoto 5-30 Cutting of the brick wall for settingreinforced concrete beamsReference:誠之堂・清風亭移築修理工事報告書5-29). However, it was avoided to cut through certain areas, including wall openings and wall corners where decorativeirregular bricks were used. In reconstructing the building, these brick wall segments were adhered using groutinserting into the walls steel bars for prestressed concretereinforcement. The foundations and top ends of walls madeof brick masonry were altered to reinforced concrete. Theoriginal brick was attached onto the surfaces of thesereinforced concrete beams to match the extant exteriorappearance (photo 5-30) fn 39 .? OverviewIn early cases of preservation involving relocationof brick masonry structures, such as St.John's Churchrestored in 1964, the building was entirely disassembleddown to individual bricks for reconstruction at a new site. However, in the restoration of Seishido, a relocation methodof dividing the walls into large segments was employed, enabling preservation of the original masonry techniques. Also, in reconstructing the wall pieces, the large scars madeby cutting were not restored but intentionally left, visuallyconveying the traces of restoration.104Chapter 6A Collection of Case Studies of Preservation and Restoration of Brick Masonry Structures
