Restoration MethodThe gable wall to be raised was covered by bolting on such materials asplywood on both sides for protection, to be lifted with oil jacks (photos 5-23,photo 5-255-24) (figure 5-8). After raising the building, the brick course where the wallwas separated at was repaired by replacing damaged bricks with new bricks, and the upper wall was returned to its original position (photo 5-25). Also, reinforcement bars were inserted vertically to solidify the walls above andbelow the crack (figure 5-9). In moving the wall back to the original positionthrough lifting of the wall member, difficulties in adjustment of joint widthmade numerous attempts necessary for this process fn 36 .? OverviewBy repairing the wall through lifting and moving the wall back to itsposition, areas requiring reconstruction or brick replacement could bephoto 5-26kept to a minimum, and thus preservation of the wall above the crack wasachieved. This method can be said to be effective for preservation of masonrytechniques and material information, particularly in highly decorative walls. However, it needs to be noted that this method can be applied only whenthe location of the crack meets the conditions required to raise the upper wallfor repositioning, and the weight of the wall is small enough to be moved. Also, after completing the restoration process, holes that were made in thewall to bolt on the protective covering in raising the wall were patched byreplacing whole bricks around the hole rather than by filling the hole, andphoto 5-27(Reference:重要文化財シャトーカミヤ旧醸造場施設保存修理工事(災害復旧)報告書)(Reference:重要文化財シャトーカミヤ旧醸造場施設保存修理工事(災害復旧)報告書)Replacing damaged bricks(Reference:重要文化財シャトーカミヤ旧醸造場施設保存修理工事(災害復旧)報告書)Protective covering of wall before lifting(photo provided by:Japanese Association forConservation of Architectural Monuments)Traces of bolts to fix the protective coveringto the wall(photo provided by:Japanese Associationfor Conservation of Architectural Monuments)103
