Restoration planningThe Great East Japan Earthquake caused horizontalpenetrating cracks on the east gable wall of thecleaning chamber close to the circular window (photo5-20), which in turn made the upper wall above thecrack slip slightly outwards. The round window andcorbelling are considered to be valuable for its designand construction techniques. The brick wall abovethe crack was found to be comparatively sound andtherefore, it was decided to move the displaced wallback to its original position, rather than to reconstructthe damaged area. After being moved back, the wallwas reinforced with steel frames (photo 5-21). Withinthe premises, the leaning chimney of the offices wasalso repositioned into place (photo 5-22) fn 35 .photo 5-21 Framework for structural reinforcement settled on the inner side of cracked wall(framework forreinforcement colored in red)photo 5-22 Brick wall after restoration(the area above the green triangles on both sideswere lifted and moved back to its position)102Chapter 6A Collection of Case Studies of Preservation and Restoration of Brick Masonry Structures
