Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

aspect approach would be preferable. For instance, some pigments of ukiyo-e prints rendertheir colors through complex pH balance in acidity and alkalinity. Neither the paper substratenor the image should be compromised for the preservation of the other. In effect, thedissemination of a treatment flow stating that pre-analysis and documentation must precede afumigation or deacidification seems necessary.Fumio Yokoshima:It is unfortunately that fumigation renders future analysis such as DNAor elemental analysis ineffective. I am not aware whether the Bookkeeper process also has aneffect on the DNA.What we are focusing on now is the preservation of paper documents to make themavailable again. We are talking of suppressing the oxidation of paper and degradation ofcellulose by means of deacidification. How to draw the line between the preservation of worksof art and massive archival collections, and how to balance the two is an ongoing challenge.●Treatment Decision Making and Deterioration Causes, Treatment CostQuestion:How are objects chosen not to deacidify? How are deteriorated objects assessed? And how do you come up with a conservation plan?Paper objects may suffer from various causes of deterioration. For instance, one of theproblems in official documents is treating large volumes with physical damages. What wouldbe the best conservation approach to such paper artifacts and how much would the cost be?Fumio Yokoshima:Such volume would initially be carefully examined on almost every page. The media, for example, are checked whether they are mimeographs, carbon copies, or fountainpens. And if it contains anything such as hectographs or diazo prints, the volume would be setaside for it cannot undergo the deacidification treatment. The examination is conducted by two people and is time consuming. We have a systemwhere data such as weight, thickness, paper quality, ink types, as well as object conditions suchas tears, losses, creases are typed in and whether it can be deacidified or not is also typed in thecomputer to calculate an estimate of the treatment.Treatment for papers is mainly based on the treatment time. For example, whether it wouldtake one or three hours. Our company sets a maximum rate for repair treatments. If thevolume requires more than six hours for the repair, we would categorize it as in need ofprofessional care and we would advice the client to take it to a conservator with proper facility. For instance, there was the mention of aqueous treatment, and our company does not havethe facility to conduct aqueous treatments and this will be handed over to a conservationstudio that are equipped with the right facility. In case the entire volume is a hectograph, deacidification would be impossible and we would advice consulting a specialist. Our company hands in a documented report on examined objects. We would discuss with84
