概要

Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

The solution is poured into a heat resistanttray while it is still hot and runny, and therigid hydrogel film forms as the solutioncools to room temperature (Photos 22ad).Gellan gum is susceptible to mould, andcan be can be covered and refrigerated forapproximately 2 weeks.Gellan gum can also be prepared withouta saline solution, which reduces the degreeof rigidity. The absence of calcium ionsin lower gel concentrations however mayrender the cast film too mushy and crumblyto handle. The calcium ions stabilize thegel structure, rendering it more firm andeasily manipulated. Similarly, the degree ofwater purity will also affect the ability of thegellan gum to form an adequately rigid form.Depending on the intended use of the gel, alower concentration of less rigidity may bedesired.5-2.
