Conservationactivities are often featured on various digitalplatforms, including the LAC website, blogsand podcasts, and social networking serviceslike Twitter and Facebook.TREATMENT CHALLENGESTreatments performed on documents byLAC conservators vary from minimalinterventions, intended to make as manyitems available for consultation anddigitization as possible, to more extensivetreatments required for objects requested forloan, exhibition, publication or other specialuse. Activities range from the physicalexamination of new acquisitions andconducting surveys to executing detailedtreatments on single items.In the course of treating paper-basedcollections material, several categories oftreatment are often encountered. Theypresent challenges that are resolved withvarious treatment protocols.? Lining: providing auxiliary supportsfor artifacts that have been weakenedor damaged by mishandling or by thepresence of inherently unstable media orsupports;? Stain reduction: different techniquesused to reduce or remove stains anddiscolouration;? Loss compensation: ways of infillingmissing fragments of the originalsupport;? Iron gall ink corrosion: treatmentsand mending procedures to stabilizedocuments executed in this inherentlydestructive medium.1. LININGLining is conducted on weakened supportsin order to consolidate multiple tears andlosses, and to strengthen deteriorated orembrittled papers. Factors considered in thechoice of lining technique include the typeand condition of the paper, the results ofsolubility tests performed on both the paperand media, the size of the object and the57
