Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

of-the-art preservation centre in Gatineau,Quebec, purposely designed and built in1997 to last for at least 500 years of servicewith minimal material replacement and toprovide a safe environment for the longtermstorage and preservation of LAC’sdiverse holdings (Photo 1).Individual laboratories for conservationtreatment, preservation copying of records,and digitization facilities are arranged in avillage-like setting on the top floor of thebuilding, directly over the three-story vaultstructure (Photo 2).There are 48 vaults in the PreservationCentre that house the different collectionsthat make up the LAC holdings.Environmental setpoints for each vault,adjusted to accommodate the specificcollection material are summarized inDiagram 1.Conservation services fall under twogroups that are broadly defined as digitaland analogue. Specialty labs providepreservation support for archival film,photography, imaging, and video and audiorecordings.
