Conservation PrinciplesOn the condition that the object willcontinue to be stored in a fire and securityprovisioned environment in the presenceof technical staffs to ensure a long-termpreservation, the following principles wereset up.[Principles]1 Avoid the use of preventive measuressuch as the addition of alkaline in theobject.2 Regular monitoring of the objects afterconservation, particularly for severelydegraded items.3 Selection of conservation and treatmentmaterials based on analytical testresults with the consensus of all peopleconcerned.4 Stabilization of the object and reusing theoriginals wherever possible.- Mending and reusing damaged bookcovers. Using new safe materials only onlost areas.- Replacing sewing threads only whenrebinding, broken or weak.5 Objects considered in need of rebindingonly will be rebound in the same bindingstyle.6 Out of order pages or re-sewings will becarefully observed to see whether they areoriginal (i.e. bound by Kamakura).7 In case some pages and attachmentsrequire individual attention, specifictreatment methods shall be discussed inmeetings.Photo 17 Preparation of test samples8 Treatment records includingdocumentation and test results will bekept for future reference.3-4. Conservation Material ExaminationTestsThe selection of materials was basedon analytical tests as mentioned in theconservation principle 3. The tests werea joint research by the Tokyo NationalResearch Institute for Cultural Propertiesand the Okinawa Prefectural University ofArts whose test results would be applied forconservation accordingly. 15For the conservation of objects onJapanese paper, the repair, lining, andsupport papers, have been used in traditionalJapanese painting conservation and theirstability and safety were well established.However, traditional techniques could notsimply be applied for treating modernwestern papers. Especially since the objectsin this project needed repairs along the tornfolded areas. For the repair of Japanese paper,a thin kozo paper with wheat starch pastecan ensure a lasting adherence and flexibility.Testing was needed to verify whether thismethod can be applied for the repair of37
