On the other hand,some books suffered deterioration causedby frequent handling over the years. Thisshows that the books have been heavilyused but still been well kept. The PTJ hasconducted minor repair treatments on someone thousand volumes along with massdeacidification (Photo 5).In the case of the Otani UniversityLibrary, deacidification treatments datesare determined according to universityschedules, such as avoiding exam periodswhen books are heavily used.11-2. Chichibu City LibraryThe Chichibu City Library, as a publiclibrary, holds a collection of city records sincebefore the merging of municipalities thatare still frequently used. These documentsare thread bound into two-hole or four-holebinding volumes, often containing variouswriting materials and paper types. Some oldarchives often contain hectographs which inthis case were removed from deacidificationtreatment. Volumes containing acid-freepaper such as Japanese paper which doesnot need deacidification, or blueprints anddiazo prints would be excluded from thetreatment. Bound volumes with variouspaper types and media need the dismantlingand rebinding for deacidification.City record archives often have creases,binding thread holes, and staples or clip rustsand minor repairs are effective. Volumeswith weak bindings or with texts that may29
