Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

ForewordThe Center for Conservation Science at the Tokyo National Research Institute for CulturalProperties has been investigating problems and countermeasure for the Conservation andRestoration of modern cultural heritage by the International symposium“Conservation ofIndustrial Heritage”was held in 1988. From 2006, the center has held types of the studymeetings to discuss to utilize the modern cultural properties.This publication consists of the lectures given on the“Conservation and Restoration ofWestern Paper”at the Institute in November 2014.First, Shunsuke Nakayama, Head of Modern Cultural Heritage Section, introduced theproblems in the conservation and restoration of Western Paper.Then, Mr. Akio Yasue, former deputy librarian at the National Diet Library and currentcontract lecture at Gakushuin University, lectured the current circumstances of modern andcontemporary paper documents conservation at the library.Thirdly, Mr. Fumio Yokoshima of Preservation Technologies Japan Co. give a detailedaccount of Mass Deacidification.Following this, Mr. Atsushi Ogasawara of Shugo Co. presented the conservation of westernpaper objects using traditional Japanese conservation techniques.Next, Ms. Alejandra Odor Chavez of the National Library of Mexico and former head ofConservation Department of the Mexican National Archive, lectured the conservation ofWestern paper in Mexico, especially corrosion and treatment of iron gall ink on paper.Lastly, Ms. Anne Frances Maheux of the Library and Archives Canada introduced effortsto conserve paper cultural properties.The center has been holding study meeting on immovable properties and large scale moderncultural heritage. However, since two years ago, it has held study meetings on audio-visualrecording media, oil paint used in modern Japanese architecture, goryosha, imperial carriageand textiles, and has invited specialists from respective fields to deepen my understanding.The Sakubei Yamamoto Collection of his diaries working in the coal mining of Chikuho and theMidokanpakuki: the Original handwritten diary of Fujiwara no Michinaga to the UNESCO’smemoryof the world, and increasing interest in the conservation and restoration of papercultural properties in Japan, we are particularly pleased to present this meeting.The restoration and conservation treatment of Western paper progressed extensively inlibraries and archives, particularly in the effort to solve the problems of ink corrosion andacidic papers. However, application of these conservation methods to cultural properties mayrequire some careful thoughts especially concerning the reversibility.We hope this publication could be of any help in methods and concept for the conservation,restoration and utilization.March 31,2016Nobuo KameiDirector GeneralTokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties1
