Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

Another report indicates that the blue colorhighlighter darkened with the Bookkeeper. 27These are materials, as well as blueprints, arenot suited in alkaline condition.Blueprints are light sensitive and fadeeasily. The fading accelerates in a humid andalkaline condition. 28, 29 Therefore blueprintsshould not be deacidified, and instead, asuitable preservation environment shouldbe considered. Diazo prints, like blueprints, easily fade and the process is accelerated inalkaline condition. 29 Other report shows thatboth Bookkeeper and DAE deacidificationprocesses slow down the deterioration ofdiazo prints. 30Hectograph, a quick printing process, appear occasionally in archives (officialdocuments) from the Meiji period onward. 31Hectograph is a printing process thatinvolves the master image written with arich color methyl violet (aniline dye) ona sheet of paper that is transferred to aprepared gelatin surface. About 100 copiescan be produced with this easy duplicatingmethod. 32 Methyl violet has the tendencyto fade in an alkaline environment, but onlya slight fading has been noticed with theBookkeeper deacidification treatment and itmay possibly be included in the treatment.Hectographs often show signs of fading andan adequate storage method is of upmostpriority for the preservation of such delicatematerials.10. Condition Check for DeacidificationCareful examination and repairs to thedocuments precede the Bookkeeperdeacidification treatment. Evaluation includeidentification of non-acidic paper whichdo not need deacidification, the conditionof paper items that need minor repair, andthe extent of deterioration for documents inneed of professional conservation. The examination for minor repairs isespecially important since the documentsmust endure the deacidification treatment.Even greater expertise is required whenexamining official documents of variouspaper types and writing materials that areoften bound together.A thorough examination of the paperitems and evaluation to the efficacy ofthe deacidification treatment is requiredalthough the task is difficult. However, thisis an important process which gives a pictureof the collection’s condition and usefulinformation for future preservation schemes.11. Case Study of the BookkeeperDeacidificationBelow are some case studies ofdeacidification and minor repairs undertakenby PTJ.11-1. Otani University LibraryThe Otani University Library holds animpressive collection of books on Buddhism. It includes an extremely rare collection ofclassical documents and Buddhist writingsfrom the middle to the Far East, some ofwhich can only be found in this library inJapan. From 2008, the PTJ has conductedmass deacidification treatments of up to tenthousand books in the Library.Condition of the collection included alarge number of brittle acidic paper items27
