Joint research on the methods of monitoring has been conducted with the Borobudur Institute for Heritage Conservation since 2008. For this purpose we have been doing researches and field investigations in both Japan and Indonesia.
In Japan Japanese and Indonesian researchers visited caves, mural paintings and stone Buddha images where the monitoring is under way, and exchanged opinions among the members. In Indonesia at Borobudur Temple on-site investigation and a workshop were held in 2009.
In 2010, Japanese-Indonesian joint team visited the group of cave paintings in South Sulawesi. In that region around 100 marble caves have drawings in red and black. The motifs are mainly hands, animals and equipments for daily use. It is said some of them have been deteriorated because of recent environmental changes, and the Borobudur Institute and BP3 Makkasar have been considering the method for conservation and monitoring of the sites. In these circumstances we observed the current situation of the paintings and their surrounding environment, and exchanged opinions regarding the possible countermeasures for protecting the sites.
