Workshop on Conservation and Restoration of Urushi Objects 2018

  Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (TNRICP) is pleased to announce a basic workshop on conservation and restoration of urushi objects (Japanese lacquerware) held in Cologne, Germany in November 2018. The workshop is free of charge, and will be conducted in Japanese with English translation at Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Museen Köln (Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne).

5. Contents


  This five-day workshop aims to introduce fundamental knowledge concerning preservation and utilization of urushi objects (Japanese lacquerware) and to share the concepts and approaches of conservation and restoration of urushi objects with Japanese traditional materials and techniques.
  The intended lectures and practical sessions are as follows.

    Lecture
  • Urushi: history, materials and techniques
  • Chemistry of urushi
  • Urushi objects: structure, damages and storage environment
  • Investigation and handling
  • Restoration of urushi objects: concept, treatment and tools
  • Remedial treatment of urushi objects
  • Concept of cleaning

  • Practical work
  • Applying urushi coating to the wooden substrate
  • Selection and adjustment of brushes for cleaning
  • Making tools



    Please Note

    *Travel and accommodation are the participant’s responsibility.
    *TNRICP does not have any grants. The participants have to seek funding for themselves.
    *The participants must prepare all official documents required to enter and stay in Germany such as visa by themselves.
    *Certificate will not be issued in the case of delayed arrival at and early leaving from the workshop.
