Illustration Books in the Oda Library

Itako Zekkushu

An illustrated book of kyoka [satirical poems] printed in color and published in 1802 (or, according to some scholars,1801). Fuji Karamaro wrote a kyoka to the tune of Itako-bushi, which appears alongside a Chinese version of the poem and illustrations by Hokusai.
Following the great vogue for kyoka, a group of poets invested in the publication of illustrated books of kyoka. Unlike ukiyoe prints, the cost of the production was not so much restricted a concern with these books. Therefore, for Hokusai, in addition to original paintings, they provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate his talents.
The illustrations in this book consist solely of portraits of the beauties, which is unusual for Hokusai. He produced these illustrations when he was 43, shortly after he had assumed the name Hokusai.
