THE HISTORY OF THE HALL

Upon his death in 1924, KURODA Seiki, who is known as the father of modern Japanese Western-style painting, bequeathed part of his estate for the use of projects to promote art. Kuroda Memorial Hall was completed in 1928 as a result of this bequest. One room is reserved in the artist's honour to exhibit works donated by his family. In 1930, an art research institute, which was later to become the current Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, was founded in order to conduct academic research and compile research material on art.

The building was designed by Okada Shin'ichiro, who was a colleague of Kuroda's at the Tokyo Art School. The collection consists of 126 oil paintings, 170 drawings, and other sketchbooks and letters, part of which is on view to the public.
