4mainly on technology or social systems. However, this study does not intend to go into academic andabstract theories, which may divert away from the realities of work at restoration sites. Moreover, recently there are many cases where architects at restoration sites are baffled by the differences inthe way of thinking that lie at the core of technological treatment in handling this new genre. Weexpect to establish a mutual understanding through discussions on this topic, hoping that this wouldbecome a driving force for future restoration projects. This report was created based on the series of lectures given on the occasion of a seminar titled“Principles for Conservation and Restoration of Modern Cultural Heritage Properties” held onJanuary 15, 2016 at the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo. Specialistsfrom Japan and abroad, representing the fields of history, architecture, and industrial archeology, gave presentations on their studies on urgent issues surrounding this topic and have provided uswith suggestions on approaches for their preservation and restoration. All were based on recentmajor restoration cases, which successfully presented the status of forefront studies on this theme.Although further studies on this topic need to be continued, this report can perhaps be read as asummary of the current state.Daijiro KitagawaHead, Modern Cultural Heritage SectionCenter for Conservation ScienceTokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties
