44201120102001199119811971shrines were begun following the beginningof cultural property designation of Edo periodtemples and shrines3), which as a result helpedmaintain their comparatively high ratio amongall building types without large drops. Figure 4 focuses on the different groupsof property owners. Owners of temples andshrines are religious organizations and directlycorrespond to the building category of templesand shrines. The publicly-owned propertiesincluding those of the national government andlocal municipalities, which started to appearin the early 1970s, were mostly folk housesurgently evacuated for relocation during thecountry’s period of high economic growth.Eventually, church structures (included in thecategory of modern architecture) began toemerge and were newly grouped as Christianreligious organizations. The increase in ratio ofnational and governmental bodies indicates thepresence of not only relocation of folk houses,but also modern architecture which wereoriginally publicly-owned. Then after 1981,there is a large increase in properties owned byprivate individuals and companies. Several casesof privately-owned residential architectureappeared and large-scale modern buildings andfacilities owned by private firms came to beincluded. Figure 5 shows the different forms ofusage (adaptive use) after restoration. In theearly years, most were employed for the samepurposes after restoration. The reason for thisis that they were mostly religious buildings incontinued use. The small ratio which appearsas museums are folk houses that becamegovernment-owned.
