Figure 1 compares restoration projectsaccording to the building’s construction period,by whether it was completed before or after theMeiji Restoration in 1868 [the dividing pointfor the beginning of the modern era]. In 1971,all structures were from before 1868. Soon after,modern buildings started to be restored andtoday, they comprise 25 to 30% of all projects. Figure 2 indicates how the ratio of therestored buildings’ structure has changedover the years. As can be seen in Figure 1,all structures restored in 1971 were fromthe early modern era or older and woodframe.Eventually, as modern structures weredesignated, restoration of brick or stonemasonry as well as reinforced concrete or steelframe structures appeared. In recent years,structures that are other than wood-framecompose 10% to 15% of all structures restoredunder national government funding. Figure 3 categorizes restoration projects bybuilding type. Although in 1971, temples andshrines (including castles) were the majoritywith only a few cases of minka folk housespertaining mostly to farmhouses and otherresidential structures. By 1981, the ratio of folkhouses rapidly increased while modern periodbuildings began to emerge. In the Heiseiera starting in 1989, the number of modernbuildings increased as that of shrines andtemples decreased.
