Although not very visually attractive, ahuge anchorage system was introduced betweenthe two suspension bridges for minimumdeflection.5) Seikan TunnelIt was the first tunnel to be constructedunder an ocean and is highly evaluated as anexample of a technical breakthrough. In tunnelconstruction, one of the most feared accidentsis water inrush. Although in mountain tunnels,the water resource will eventually be exhausted,in tunnels under the ocean, the amount of thesurrounding water is unlimited. Constructionwork of the Seikan Tunnel was undertakenplacing topmost priority in countermeasures forsudden water intrusion. There were numerousinnovative technologies that enabled this verydifficult task and the largest three amongthose were the sophisticated know-how thatwas developed through advanced boring,cement injection, and spraying of concrete.Firstly, preliminary testing by long horizontalboring is executed to determine the geologyand conditions of water inflow of the groundahead. When water infiltration is discovered,it is stopped before drilling, and cement andchemical agents are injected simultaneouslyto stop water seepage; after drilling, concreteis sprayed onto the surface to assure stabilityof the bedrock. Each of these techniqueswas developed owing to unrelenting creativeefforts, through trial and error.
