「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

31on the original site plan is available on guideboards. The former coal transportation system isnow used to carry people and the visitors areimmediately charmed by this ingenuity as theyare taken into the mining facility. Followingthis ride, they view exhibition rooms createdwithin the coal transportation system. They donot view these exhibit facilities or spaces as“visitors,” but fully experience these exhibits bybecoming a part of the system, moving throughthe Zollverein. At first, each of these facilities seems to beindependent from one another, in the way theyare preserved or presented. However, an overallview of the complex reveals the fact that theyare indeed highly controlled under a commonprinciple for preservation and restoration. Thecharacteristic of each building is taken intoconsideration to be reflected on methods foradaptive use or presentation. The influenceof the designers and producers involved canbe detected in the differences that appear ineach of these buildings. Such differences inthe areas preserved and those altered createan environment where the historic spaces andexhibits can be enjoyed by all visitors to the site.Photo 6 An example of preservation of monumentalfacilities at Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France (photo:courtesy of Etsuo Yokoyama and Shouji Ishida)mining basin is characterized also by the manyworkers’ housing which remains intact. Whileit is difficult to find slagheaps in the Chikuhoregion in Japan’s Kyushu today, those in Nord-Pas-de-Calais are treasured as the culturallandscape of the area. One can even climb upthese hills and enjoy a view of the coal minedistrict from above. I imagined that accessto such locations would enable visitors tounderstand the entire complex. However, thiswas not so. There appears to be no informationcenters or on-site museums. The region isspread over a large area of 120 kilometers eastto west and 12 kilometers wide. Not being ableto grasp the region as a whole, the characteristicsof each place cannot be understood. Industrialfacilities including the train tracks have beenremoved and the system is not presented at thesite. There are vertical shafts and buildings leftstanding, but it is only monumental structuresand those that stand out that remain (Photo 6)and related facilities such as trains or machineryare not preserved.(2) Coal Mines in the Lille Region (France)In 2015, the general meeting of TICCIHFrance was held in Lille in northern France, about 200 kilometers north of Paris, closeto the Belgian border. Their internationalconference occurs once every three years andin 2012, it was held in Taiwan, for the firsttime in Asia. I was not able to attend the 2015conference due to a sudden change of schedule,so this report will be given using photos I lateracquired of the meeting6).
