The building mentioned above was one ofthe first we visited at the Zollverein. Therewere many alterations and exhibitions, whichto me seemed daring. After having witnessedeven more bold alterations at other sites andbuildings, the coal storage at the Zollverein cannow be understood as a way of changing andexhibiting the place, with due considerationto the site and structure. There were structuresheavily modified to hide all traces of how theyhad been in the past. Although I am unable to present detailsof individual case studies, my impression onadaptive use of structures at the Zollverein canbe summarized as follows.① There was plenty of land at the site, whereit has been zoned into areas to be developedfor visitors and areas to be left untouched.Buildings are categorized into those to bepreserved and those for adaptive use, and thelatter is well utilized.② The entire site is planned to be preservedas a system, with exhibits and presentationmethods to enable visitors to understand howthe complex worked.
