概要

「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

20for preservation as a cultural property andwas finally saved. This was the beginning ofIndustrial Archeology in Germany. Since 1969 there had been lots ofconservation projects executed on this building, which are not very well documented (Photo19). Today we are lucky that it was preservedbut we are not so lucky regarding how it wasconserved. 10 years ago we started a newdocumentation and the developing of plans fora new conservation period. The cost estimatewas around 6.5 million Euros, this conservationwas finished in August 2016.The first problem we encountered was that thislarge building stood in water. The drainagedid not work and the first step was get thewater around the building out of the buildingand the basement with a proper drainage. Theexcavations for the drainage revealed that twosteps of the stairs of the central entrance weresubmerged in the gravel ? interestingly enoughno one knew that before. Again, problems werethe main pillars, the corrosion of these pillarsand corrosion inside the brick fields in between.Again, we opened one field and got the bricksoff. This field was also used to try methods forconservation of the steel structure and developa base for cost calculation for conserving theold walls. All foot foundations of these pillarshad to be opened out of structural reasons, tomake sure if they are still able to bear the loads. Also, we had to rebuilt the brick insets andchoose the brick type and its colors. You can do all this on a trial and error basebut it is better to have some advice fromexperts working in the same field. An advisoryboard was installed to discuss all these measures, choose the right one which was accepted bythe majority of experts and which could bepresented to a very critical public. Representedin this board were of course the owner, whichis the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia,then the department for the conservation andpreservation of cultural properties, the museumpeople which use this building, architects andcorrosion experts. This advisory board hasworked together for 8 years. Very important became the questions aboutcolors inside and out. More than 250 color samples were taken, butthe final decision which color to choose wasmade by the board. For example, we found thatthe ceiling was at an unknown date painted ina beige colour. We decided not to use this againbecause it seemed very unusual and ugly. Oldpictures show that the glass was stained withcolours. But of course we had only black andwhite pictures. So, it was very difficult to decidePhoto 18 Machine Hall during a meeting of the advisoryboardPhoto 19 Stained glass windows of the Machine Hall
