19also in Yawata. The workshops there, whichare part of the World Heritage designationwere made in Germany. You can still see therolling marks on the profiles with the germanGutehoffnungshutte label. The conservation and restoration of thesebuildings is not so difficult, but there are someproblems to be solved. One example is alsolocated in Duisburg-Meiderich. If you look atthe wall and the columns, you see traces of use, abuse and former repairs, perhaps also some wardamages and repairs after bombing, representedin different brick types in the fields set into thesteel skeleton (Photo 17). These brick walls didnot give trouble, they could be repaired in thesame way as treated before. More difficult werethe columns bearing the load of the roof andthe inside crane. These columns or pillars arecomposed out of U-shaped profiles connectedby heavy steel plates, as can be seen from theoutside of the building. Of course these hadbeen riveted when this hall and its steel framewere erected, but there were repairs - we donot know at which time. The rivets were pulledout and were substituted by screws. We werequite happy about the screws because it wouldbe very difficult and costly today to make newriveting in such a large number. To look insidethe profiles and the pillars to get informationabout the current state you have to get thescrews out, but you cannot look at the innerside of the profiles because the space is filled inwith bricks. To try out repair and conservation methods,we had a so called experimental site in a smallarea. The positive results could then be used inthe larger scale on the whole building. We have seen before that the brick wallswere already in very different shape and we sawPhoto 17 Different brick types in the fields set intothe steel skeletonall the traces of lots of repairs. We decided tonot imitate any old-fashioned brick walls, butto show that it was recently repaired with newbricks. The architecture of the machine hall of theZollern II/IV mine was inspired by theart-nouveaux-style of the Paris UniversalExhibition in 1900. Exhibition pavilions thereexposed their steel skeletons on the outsideand were decorated with art nouveau elements, which became quite modern. The owner of theZollern mine changed the architecture fromthe conservative stone decoration to this style. This machine hall is also very importantfor the history of preservation of industrialbuildings in Germany (Photo 18). In thelate 1960s it was the first industrial typeobject which came into public discussion
