「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

17An important question is also how todemonstrate these processes. ShunsukeNakayama talked about machinery ? should themachine run or not? Of course you cannot runan iron and steel production as a demonstrationin a museum. It’s much too costly, much toodangerous. We can only keep the cultural property ofclosed-down iron and steel production plants. One production type of steel before theinvention of the bottom-blast converter wasthe so called Siemens-Martin oven. I will notexplain the process as it was outdated about1960. But we had a good chance to preserve anexample in Germany. Socialist East Germanycould not buy bottom-blast converters becausethey had to pay a lot of money for using thepatent. They had to stick to the Siemens-Photo 13 The Siemens-Martin ovens Photo 14 LWL Industrial Museum Zollern II/IV collieryPhoto 12 The Brandenburg Siemens-Martin plantMartin ovens since the 1950s, which was quiteextraordinary. After reunification in 1990, thisplant was closed down immediately because itwas no longer economically viable to work withthis old process. There were 12 Siemens-Martinovens working in this very large installment, only one of them could be preserved inside thisbuilding in the city of Brandenburg, which isnearby Berlin. As you might see, this oven doesnot need so much conservation work becauseit is under a roof cover and is a very robuststructure (Photos 12-13).Now we will change the subject to the secondimportant field of preservation and conservation, that is mining. Black coal mining is nearlyfinished in Germany, only 2 mines are stillworking which will be closed in 2018 and thenremains only lignite coal open-cast mining inthe east of Germany. In the Ruhr Area coal mining was the basefor the development of this industrial region. The Zollern II/IV mine in Dortmund wasfounded in about 1900. The architecture ofthe first buildings was very conservative. Thebuilding housing the winding engines andcompressors shows a totally different design inart-nouveaux style. The mine is now one of theindustrial museums in the Ruhr Area and one
