概要

「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

15weapons must be used like sandblasting. We donot like it because sandblasting always removessome of the original material. We now usemainly high pressure water guns to clean thesetight spaces from rust. With these experiences we believe that repairof large-scale steel structures is not too difficultand also the costs can be calculated accurately. We have much more problems with concretestructures. Their repair is very very costly ?usually 10 times more costly than the repair ofsteel structures.Preservation of large blast furnace sites becamevery popular all around Europe. Nearly eachcountry in Europe now has its own blastfurnace to be conserved, or two or three. Thereare more blast furnaces preserved in Europethan those which are actually producing iron.In Germany alone 15 modern blast furnacesare protected as monuments like these two inthe Dortmund Phoenix plant, also in the RuhrArea, which will neither become a landscapepark or a museum. They will just stay there andgot only minor conservation, but we rebuilt oneof the blast furnaces for public access.I will also show examples from otherEuropean countries. That is the Belval plant inPhoto 7 The Belval plant in Luxembourg Photo 8 Vitkovice Iron Works in the Czech RepublicLuxembourg, two large blast furnaces preservedand conserved inside a new development (Photo7). I do not like this approach because theseblast furnaces go into competition with the newdevelopment, a new bank building about thesame size, same height. The production chainand the connections of the blast furnaces istotally lost. It’s just some sculptures standinginside the new development.Another site, Vitkovice Iron Works in theCzech Republic, is on the tentative list forWorld Heritage, but has not developed furtheron (Photo 8). Another very curious exampleis in Sagunto in Spain, with the relics of a blastfurnace standing in the middle of a roundabout(Photo 9).As you might have seen, the iron production inblast furnaces is very well documented in Europewith a large number of blast furnaces beingpreserved and even conserved and restored. Butpeople do not understand easily the differencebetween iron production and the following steelproduction process. No modern steel production
