概要

「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

13In the middle of the 1980s, Germany triedto preserve two large blast furnace sites. Theone I go to first is Duisburg-Meiderich in theRuhr Area, I have been working there since1990 onwards. There were three blast furnacesto be conserved and all necessary aggregatesaround (Photo 2). The aim was to preserve thewhole production process and all elements ofan iron producing plant, as already mentionedthis morning. I will go into conservation andrestoration problems later on. But when westood before these blast furnaces, it was quiteclear that we could not use a scalpel to cleanit, and we could not use resin to protect it. Wehad to develop a more robust approach to keepthis very large site. You can see the sheer sizeon the plan of the site, which leads the publicvisiting the site and showing the objects andwhat they were used for. Around this industrialarea a large landscape park was developed. Thislandscape park was meant for public use andafter 25 years I think this was a great successas you might see in one of the pictures. Yes,children are allowed to climb on this plate, andit is also allowed to climb on top of one of theblast furnaces on stairs and platforms made safefor visitors (Photo 3).The Ruhr Area has not this site only. There is alarge number of former industrial sites whichmight be visited. Some of them are museums, others are parks like the one you already saw. What you see here in red lines and dots iscalled the Route of the Industrial Culture ofthe Ruhr Area (Figure 1). Some of the red dotsare so called anchor points where you havevisitor centers and you get guidance for whatyou can visit, and by which means, either bybike, car or public transport. We have collected some experience inmaking these sites public and also how toconserve and restore them. The public is veryimportant in our country because we also needpolitical support. That is simply a question ofmoney. Politicians will only spend money forpreservation and conservation of these sites ifthey are accepted by the public. Nobody ever talked about money in the RuhrArea but there are rumors that in the last 35years 1 billion Euros were spent on this Routeof Industrial Culture including the objects andsites, which is about 125 billion Yen. But youmust understand that the money was spreadover a period of 35 years of development. There was another site in Germany veryimportant for iron and steel productionPhoto 3 Landscape park Figure 1 Route of the Industrial Culture of the Ruhr Area
