「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

12Industrial Heritage ManagementRolf HohmannBureau for Industrial Archeology, GermanyFirst I would like to thank you for being invitedagain to this institute. In my recollection Ithink it is the sixth time I have the pleasureto give a lecture. I could visit some of the sitesin Europe you will see today together with myjapanese collegues. The main themes I would like to talk aboutare the two sides of the preservation andconservation of large-scale industry. First, preservation is the more intellectual side whichsays how to choose the sites, how to preservethe sites in political and financial matters, andmaking these sites valuable for the public. Ithink it’s a very important field. The secondfield is how to deal with these large-scalestructures, how to conserve them, how to workwith them, how to keep them for the nextgeneration as Shunsuke Nakayama alreadypointed out. In the last 30 years I could work in both ofthese fields. So, I might show some experiencesfrom both sides. I have chosen two types ofindustries as examples. Of course there are lotsmore. The first type is iron and steel productionand the second is mining industries. You might wonder why I start with aJapanese example. But you may not knowthat this example was very important for thepreservation developments in Europe. Yawatablast furnace closed in 1972 and is kept nowfor more than 40 years as a monument (Photo1). It was truly the first attempt to conservea large-scale industrial structure and it wasimportant to refer to it when we startedpreserving large-scale industries in Europe. Wemight discuss different conservation policieson this object, but it was the first try so it isunderstandable that some mistakes occurred. The only other example were two blast furnacesin Birmingham, Alabama, which were savednearly at the same time.Photo 1 Yawata blast furnace Photo 2 Two blast furnaces in Duisburg-Meiderich
