「近代の文化遺産の保存理念と修復理念」英語版

11restoration of modern cultural properties. Ofcourse, these are not the only problems. Therewill be new problems appearing all the time. Because major causes of deterioration ofpreserved structures employing such materialsas concrete, steel frame, or bricks pertain tostructural strength and directly affect theirwellbeing, this is something that needs be faced. It can easily be imagined that there may betimes when efforts to save the original state canresult in threatening the strength of the entirestructure. How each of these cases should behandled need to be judged individually throughcareful analysis and studies. Although this isa matter not directly linked to conservationprinciples, taking this problem too seriouslymay bring unfavorable results. Then, how should this problem be solved?Although none of the restoration cases I havepresented provides definite answers, it needs tobe noted that what is to be preserved shouldbe decided depending on the significanceof each property. The actual procedures forpreservation should be planned following thisprocess. Such way of understanding may bedeviating from the title of my lecture, principlesin conservation and restoration. Naturally, principles need to be stable and should notbe changed, but in reality, particularly withmodern cultural properties, I believe that it isdifficult to follow these principles entirely. This then may be a problem of application. The examples introduced in my lecture todaymay not have been anything new to many ofyou. I am aware that I went back to the verybeginning in dealing with these principles. Irealize now that I handled each of these casesthrough trial and error without being able toreach a definitive conclusion. I experienced thisprocess together with all of you, who are alsopuzzled with what to preserve at each of therestoration sites. Each time, I question myselfwhether this was the appropriate methodor not. There are cases where the differentdecisions taken surprise me. I cannot denythat there is also a part of me that stops mefrom saying that this was the correct answerto the problem. I believe that this seminarhas provided a chance for us to considerconservation and restoration of modern culturalproperties, by going all the way back to thebasics.
