Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

our clients the treatment methods and advise them for any questions including where toapproach for certain problems. For bound volumes that will be stored in a standing position, if the binding is strong enough, with a hard cover that will not warp, then the volume will be returned without a storage box.Large volumes or simple bindings in libraries would warp in time. For such volume, we wouldadvice a folder or envelope to prevent warping when vertically stored. We retain the original binding threads if they are sound. This reflects the cost if such volumesare to be treated in the hundreds and thousands. This is the difficult part when assessing amass collection.●Deciding Conservation TreatmentsQuestion:You just mentioned that you would advise severely degraded volumes to be taken toa conservation studio. But if there is just a few of them while the rest of the collection can bedeacidified, how would you proceed in such case?Fumio Yokoshima:If the treatment could be done within the time frame, then we wouldconsider treating those in need of repair. But in case when some of the pages have severelydeteriorated with fibers disintegrating, and cannot be treated within the time frame, then wewould recommend taking it to a conservator.●Number of repaired itemsQuestion:What is the rough number of items that you have repaired yearly?Fumio Yokoshima:In the six years since the establishment of the company in 2008, we havedeacidified about 90 thousand volumes. This is minute compared to the number treated in ourUS headquarter.Repair treatments conducted in the past six years amount to 10 thousand. These treatmentsinclude minor mending of the spine cover to repairs taking up to three to four hours.85
