DESIGN OF A DOCUMENTPRESERVATION CASELAC has recently completed the design andfabrication of a preservation and displaycase for our nation’s most importantfoundation document, The Constitution of theProclamation, which gives Canada politicalindependence and sovereignty from Britain.There are two original signed versions of theProclamation of the Constitution Act: onesuffered water damage during the outdoorpublic signing ceremony, and the other wasdeliberately defaced with red paint in aprotest action several months later (Photos32a,b).Studies conducted in 2012 by theCanadian Conservation Institute (CCI) withmicrofade testing, a type of accelerated lightagingtest 17 , verified that the signature inksused on both copies of the Proclamation ofthe Constitution are extremely light sensitive.The Preventive Care and MaintenanceSection of LAC worked closely with theLAC conservators and CCI scientists tocreate specifications that would include allthe necessary features necessary to protectthe documents.
