Thus, it is essentialto identify the nature and condition of thedocumental collections, develop strategiesfor decission making and apply themconsistently. 9Assessment of documents with irongall inksDue to the nature of iron gall inks and theirparticular degradation, the application ofany aqueous conservation treatment couldencourage the migration of iron (II) ions andsulphuric acid, and therefore, the extent ofink corrosion to the entire document. Eventreatments involving partial humidificationcould promote migration of iron ions andsulphuric acid. Thus, the application ofaqueous treatments in conservation couldrepresent more risks than benefits fordocuments with iron gall inks with excessiron ions.Currently, there are several options forchemical and mechanical stabilization ofiron gall inks with excess of iron, and thetrue complexity lies in the decision makingprocess for every case.
