of the test results 20 . Shin-nori, HPC, MCand animal glue adhesives were comparedand evaluated for their adhesive strength, stiffness, fold endurance and practicality(Figure 3).In principle, re-sewing followed thetechnique of the object and so did therebinding. Before the dismantling of thebinding, detail diagrams of the structurewere recorded, and at times, structuralsamples of the same binding were madebefore commencing the treatment. Meetingsamong people concerned were held todiscuss problems such as out of order pagesor missing pages. In this project, the notebooks were used byKamakura on a daily basis and the missing(torn off ) pages must certainly have beenby him. Therefore, it was decided to leavethe missing pages as they were without theattempt to restore them.6 Preventive measures- Acid-free, alkaline-free and size-freeinterleaves.- Custom-made folders and storage boxes.Besides interventive treatments to theobjects, the insertion method using acid-free,alkaline-free and size-free interleaves wastaken wherever it was thought necessary. The method was used to protect adjacentpages from the ink with relatively highiron (II) ion color reaction number or fromdiscolored and acidic pages where colormigration has occurred. Each volume will be placed in acid-free,alkaline-free paper folders and stored innewly made archival boxes instead of theexisting paulownia wooden boxes. A setof about ten volumes will go in each box.Attachments and folded documents will bestored flat in custom made archival boxes.Gas adsorption sheets and indicators placedinside storage boxes will serve as a guideduring regular check ups (Photos 22-24).Other care was noted in the conservationreport as well as directly on the storageboxes.4. ConclusionConservation projects of this historicaldocument were conducted in respect to thefollowing: 1 Long term preservation ofthe notebooks and its written contents. 2Preservation of the present structures whichtell the state they were used by YoshitaroKamakura. 3 Minimal intervention ondamaged areas and deacidification, withoutthe use of preventive measures. Assurea stable environment, safe handling andregular monitoring. These treatment aimswere drawn with the cooperation of peopleconcerned, in recognition of the importanceof the historical value of the objects and thedetermination to pass on the legacy.Books in archival collections are diverseand abundant, which must be passed onto future generation without endangeringthe historical integrity that has come downto us. Unfortunately, attempts to save allof the modern paper objects which aredeteriorating and unstable are much harderthan preserving papers from the pre-modernperiod. Therefore, conservation treatmentplans must be built with the cooperationof the owner, specialists, and conservatorsupon multiple discussions to come up41
