Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

evaluation data were collected for theselection of materials for their respectivepurposes.3-5. Repair and PreservationConservation treatments were conductedfollowing the conservation principles andthe test results are as follows.[Overview]1 Repair of damaged areas such as creases, tears and losses.2 Deacidification treatment for severelyacidic paper.3 Lining of ink corroded areas.4 Treatment of cellophane tapes and staples.5 Book cover and sewing thread repairs.6 Preventive measures.- Placing acid-free, alkaline-free andsize-free interleaves.- Preservation folders and storage boxes.[Description] (Photos 18-21)1 Repair of damaged areas (creases, tears and losses)Adhesion strength test (peel strength test)results showed shin-nori and MC to havealmost equal adhesive strength, whilethe HPC adhesive strength decreasedsignificantly that measurements were notdetected (Figure 1). In the fold endurancetest for repair papers to reinforce creases,HPC measurements excelled (Figure 2).Each test and analysis results served asdecision index for the treatment of each area.Added to this was the practical experience oftraditional painting conservation techniquesin using shin-nori (with the occasionaladdition of funori) for the infill of lost areas, mending tears, and reinforcement of creases. However, water based shin-nori wasAverage peel strength [N]Shin-nori HPC MCFigure 1 The influence of paper types and adhesive typeson adhesive strengthPeel strength test of adhesives(kozo paper + notebook)Fold endurance test[common logarithm of fold number]RawNoriHPCMCFigure 2 Change of adhesive strength depending onadhesive types (horizontal line)Clarl stiffnessShin-noriUnmeasurableYamanoue, R., Kato, M. and Ogasawara, A., Mechanicalproperty of adhesive coated Japanese paper (Settyakuzaio Tohu shita Washi no Rikigakuteki Seinou ni Tsuite), TheJapan Society for the Conservation of Cultural Property,36th Annual Conference Abstracts, pp.224-225, 2014.GlueMCHPCFigure 3 Adhesive type influence on stiffinessJapanese paper vertical lineYamanoue, R., Kato, M., Ogasawara, A. and Nakamura,H., Investigation of restoration materials of the case bindingcover (Note no Sekurumi Shufuku Zairyou no Kentou), TheJapan Society for the Conservation of Cultural Property,37th Annual Conference Abstracts, pp.174-175, 2015.39
