With theseissues in mind, numerous tests and trialswere conducted for the selection of repairpapers and adhesives and mechanical resultswere assessed (Photo 17).Papers used for the test were kozo andwestern paper, and the adhesives tested werewheat starch paste (shin-nori), hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) and methyl cellulose (MC).Test papers were from a Germanproduced notebook made of softwoodand hardwood pulps paper, and therepair papers were hand made Usuminoshi.Samples were prepared by applyingeach adhesive to the papers. Tests such asfolding endurance test and peel strength testwere conducted according to the JapaneseIndustrial Standards ( JIS). 17 The thicknessof each adhesive was determined based onpreliminary test results that would suit theactual treatments.Adhesion strength tests and foldingendurance tests were also conducted forcotton fabrics lined with Japanese paper tobe used in case binding repairs.
