Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

About Tihs PublicationIn 1998, the Center for Conservation Science (former Center for Conservation Science andRestoration Techniques) at the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties,held an International Symposium titled“The Conservation of Industrial Heritage”, and since,it has been taking up problems and seeking solutions in the conservation and restoration ofmodern cultural properties. From 2006, the Center has held regular meetings seeking practicaluse of cultural properties.This publication is a collection of papers on the study meeting held in November 2014 titledthe“Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper”. Among the speakers are specialistsworking in a library, in the restoration of western paper, and in paper restoration. Guests fromthe National Archives in Mexico and Canada respectively were also invited to give accounts ofthe present restoration issues in their archives.I began the meeting with a lecture on the problems in the conservation and restorationof western paper in Japan. Followed with a lecture by Professor Akio Yasue, former deputylibrarian at the National Diet Library and current contract lecturer at Gakushuin University,on the conservation of modern and contemporary paper documents through his experienceworking in a library.Thirdly, Mr. Fumio Yokoshima of Preservation Technologies Japan Co. presented a detailedaccount on mass deacidification. Then Mr. Atsushi Ogasawara from Shugo Co. talked aboutthe restoration of western paper objects using traditional Japanese restoration techniques.Dr. Alejandra Odor Chavez of the National Library of Mexico and former head ofConservation Department of the Mexican National Archive explained about the conservationof western paper in Mexico, specifically on the corrosion of iron gall ink on paper.Lastly, Ms. Anne Frances Maheux of the Library and Archives Canada gave account of theconservation approach of cultural properties on paper in Canada.The Modern Cultural Heritage Section of the Center for Conservation Science has heldmeetings on the conservation of immovable properties and large-scale modern culturalproperties. In recent years, it has broadened its topics to the Conservation and Restoration ofaudio and visual recordings; oil paint used in modern architectures; and Goryosha and textiles,and has invited specialists from respective fields to deepen their understanding.This meeting follows the inclusion of the Sakubei Yamamoto Collection of his diaries workingin the coal mining of Chikuho and of the Midokanpakuki: the original handwritten diary ofFujiwara no Michinaga to the UNESCO’s Memory of the World, and with a growing interestof cultural properties on western papers, we are particularly pleased to present this meeting onthe topic of restoration of western paper.The Conservation and Restoration treatment of western papers progressed extensivelyin libraries and archives worldwide, particularly in the effort to solve the problems of inkcorrosion and acidic papers.
