Conservation and Restoration of Western Paper

years ahead, namely preservation for thefuture, also need to be tackled. In order tocontribute to this prospective preservation, permanent paper, rather than acidic paper, should be used for books and documents. Inmicrofilming, changing the substance usedas a base from TAC (Cellulose triacetate) toPET (Polyethylene terephthalate) will havea similar effect. This concept of prospective preservation isgoing to be crucial even for the preservationof digitalized documents by preservingthem in a standardized format together withpreservation metadata and by using longlastingmedia.4. ConclusionWhat is preservation of documents? Tothis basic question asked at libraries andarchives, an answer has been figured out asfollows, based on recent experience acquiredthrough the efforts made in relation to someimportant issues.Document preservation in libraries andarchives aims to ensure availability andaccessibility of the documents housedfor present and future use, and is variousactivities to make this possible. The role of libraries and archives is toprovide citizens and researchers with thematerials housed there. The collectionshould be accessible to users not only fortoday but also in the future. The policies andefforts associated with this view are knownas library and archives preservation.Generally speaking, the collectionshoused in libraries and archives are massive. The institutions should ensure continuousavailability of such enormous collectionsto the people. In the author’s opinion, thebasis of the approaches to fulfill this dutycan be the five points already mentioned inthe previous section, namely the importanceof originality, preservation of“collections”,importance of prevention measures, application of reproduction techniques andnew preservation paradigm.Furthermore, as for the preservation ofmodern paper-based documents as culturalproperties, the following should be pointedout, along with the importance of originality. It is the existence of an extremely formidable“enemy”inherent in documents, such asacid and lignin contained in paper and irongall ink which can cause ink corrosion.Presentations on these issues are going tofollow on in this study meeting. To conserveoriginal documents some treatments arerequired, for instance the deacidification ofacidic paper and an antioxidant treatmentto prevent paper from ink corrosion. Itis important to understand that they arebasically treatments aimed at restrainingdeterioration to paper documents and attrying to prolong their lifetime, namelypreventive measures.Notes1.
