The Library and Archives Canada(The Preservation Centre in Gatineau)The main buildings of The Library andArchives Canada are situated in Ottawa city,and its Preservation Centre is located in asuburban area, Gatineau. The conservationdepartment is part of The PreservationCentre in Gatineau, so only a survey on thisPreservation Centre, not the main buildings,was conducted this time.The Preservation Centre in Gatineau is amodern structure completed in 1997. It hasa steel frame with glass walls and a stainlesssteel roof. The building is a dual structurewith a concrete building inside the glassexterior. This structural form is supposed tomake managing pests and environmentalcontrol easier. All infrastructure equipment,such as air conditioning and electricalfacilities, has been installed in the adjacentbuilding and is activated through pipes(Photos 8-10).The interior concrete structure has fivefloors, and the fist to the third floor areused as a repository, the fourth floor is foroperational equipment, and the fifth flooraccommodates restoration and researchfacilities.Each floor of the repository, from thefirst to the third floor, is divided into sixteenrooms (in total forty-eight rooms), and eachroom stores different kinds of objects andoffers an optimal condition for the respectiveobjects housed within (Photos 11-16).On the fifth floor, besides the restorationand research facilities for paper documents(books, photography, maps and paintings),audio editing and restoration equipmentis also installed (Photos 17 and 18). InCanada, The Library and Archives Canadaand the Canada Conservation Institute(CCI) have been cooperating on researchinto the conservation of cultural property,and the results of this research have beenreflected in their actual activities.4. Future Issues in the Conservationand Restoration of Western PaperWith the increasing demand for therestoration of items using western paper ascultural properties, traditional restorationtechniques have been applied to westernpaper, which is actually produced usingwood pulp and whose constituent fibers arerelatively short.
